3/16/03: Raceway Park, NJ
(Moto 1) 250C: 16th
Well, this was my first race of the 2003 season. What a disaster! My start was midpack. I stalled my bike after a few turns and couldn't get it started for around 2 minutes. I just bought a CRF450 and I guess I don't have the starting technique mastered yet. Then I rode like a girl. Not like Jessica Paterson, like my grandma! I managed to stall it again after a few laps and that was that.
(Moto 2) 250C: 11th
Moto #2 went better than the first. I only stalled it once. Horray! I got a better start, but shut off too soon. It wouldn't have mattered though because I rode like my grandpa this time! I rode a lttle better, but I gotta get some balls and a few things worked out. I need to start riding a lot. This winter has been terrible weather-wise and it shows.

3/30/03: Raceway Park, NJ
(Moto 1) +30C: 3rd
I am officially an old man now! I turned 30 last Friday. I decided to race the +30 class to help build up confidence and get back in the swing of things. The novice and amateur classes together due to the weather and the number of riders that showed up. There were 13 novices and 4 amateurs. We a lined up and reaced together. I got the holeshot for both classes. I didn't ride that well though. I was in 1st for my class for the first 2 laps. I wound up finishing in 3rd. I was happy to get a good start and lead for a while.
(Moto 2) +30C: 6th
Since I had accomplished a few things in the first moto, I wanted to complete the rest of the goals for the day. I wanted to win and ride well. I did 1 of the 2. I didn't get as good a start as in the first moto. I slipped in behind a rider going into the first turn. Unfortunately, he fell I had nowhere to go. I was in second to last by the time I got going. A few turns later I fell trying to pass a rider. The bike didn't stall and I got going in last this time. I was pissed and it was a good thing I got a bad start and crashed because it lit a fire that will help me for the rest of my racing life. I put my head down and told myself that I had to deal with what happened. As bad as I wanted a win I just had to ride as hard as I could. I caught all the way back up to 2nd and was setting up a pass for 2nd, but I stalled the bike and couldn't get it started. I was giving it gas like a 2 stroke when I was kicking it. I am glad I had trouble starting the bike because I learned what not to do and next time I won't forget. I am very pleased with my progress so far this season. I have a new bike with little time on it, but I am learning and progressing in the right direction. Thanks to Mike Racini at RRP for setting up the suspension perfect. With the way I rode in the 2nd moto and a start like in the 1st moto I will win easilly. I can't wait till next week!
Overall: 4th

4/6/03: Raceway Park, NJ
(Moto 1) +30C: 6th
Good start. I was in 3rd after a few turns. I was riding very cautious. I got very tight, wasn't holding on with my legs, and I wasn't looking ahead. All 3 made each one of the 3 worse. I finished a disappointing 6th. After my second moto last week I feel I should be winning.
(Moto 2) +30C: 12th
In the end it was a replay of last week with a slightly different story line. Bad start. I was off balance after I cleared the starting gate and I had to shut off. I was in about 10th after the first lap. I still wasn't riding well though. On the second lap I was working my way around another rider when he fell and I had nowhere to go. I crashed into him and by the time I got going I was in dead last and then some. Why these crashes motivate me and being in front doesn't I haven't figured out just yet. I said to myself that the crash is over and I just need to put in some honest laps. I rode much better and started picking guys off in groups. In the end, I ran out of time. I was about 10 seconds behind the winner which means I was making up tons of time. I NEED TO RIDE LIKE THAT ALL THE TIME! When that happens I will be fine. I thought the week before was a lesson learned, but apparently not. I hope this week was the final exam and I can move forward.

4/13/03: Broome-Tioga, NY
(Moto 1) +30C: 2nd
I got the holeshot, but slipped out after a few turns. I got up in last and charged to the front. The dirt here is very misleading as I found out throughout the day. I have been here before, but it's been a while. I thought I rode ok.
(Moto 2) +30C: 1st
Another holeshot and this time I stayed up! I had always wondered what it felt like to lead a mot from start to finish. It feels awesome! I didn't even ride that hard. The competition wasn't that tough, but a win is a win. This was my first moto win ever and first overall as well. I didn't ride exceptionally well, but that had to do with the track and not being used to it. I rode cautious, but I had a blast! I almost didn't sign up for this class because I hadn't ridden 2 classes this year.

(Moto 1) 250C: 10th
I got a good start. I was in the top 3 for a lap. Then lost 2 positions, then 2 more, then I stalled it with a few corners to go. I realized I was blipping the throttle in the corners like I would a 2-stroke so the bike wouldn't stall. I was burning out my clutch by doing so. That's why I have had so many stalls at the ends of motos. I tried just pulling in the clutch in turns after and it worked fine. I am still getting used to the bike and it's tendencies. I wasn't happy with my ride, but I wasn't comfortable on the track so I am not surprised.
(Moto 2) 250C: 10th
The gate guy was inconsistent all day. He is supposed to wait 3-5 seconds after the card is turned sideways. So I was waiting till the card turned sideways and then focusing on the gate. This time the card turned sideways and as I was looking down to focus on the gate it dropped! I didn't get a very good jump, but I was still in the mix when a guy went down right in front of me. I crashed into him and our bikes got caught up. By the time I got going I was in 2nd from last and the pack was way gone. I rode my best moto of the day that race. I caught up to 10th, but I was happy with how I responded. The reason I was racing in NY this weekend was to qualify for the regional for Loretta Lynn's. I was able to do that, so goal accomplished.

4/27/03: Raceway Park, NJ
(Moto 1) +30C: 3rd
I had a decent start. The track was very rough already and this was only the first moto of the day. It was the 17th moto, but usually the track isn't this rough first moto. We all have to ride the same track though. I didn't ride very loose, but it was probably the track. I passed a some guys and eventualy got into 4th. I got a gift on the last lap as a rider went down on the finishline straight and I finished in 3rd.
(Moto 2) +30C: ?
By the time the second moto came around my right side of my body was cramping up. This wasn't a good sign because the mot hadn't even started yet. I decided I still needed to try and give it what I had. I didn't have a great start and tried to be patient because I knew everyone else had to be tired too. I don't ride well when I am being patient. Guys kept passing me and I just kept saying don't push it. Then one guy came around me and cut into my line off a jump. The result was my front tire hitting his rear and I went down hard. I decided to call it a moto and a day. I just didn't have the strength in my right side to ride.

(Moto 1) 250C: 11th
Another first turn pile up with me going down again. I don't know if I am being to aggressive or what, but this sucks. I got up in last and rode back up to 11th. I think it was the best I rode all day. I was having so shock issues because of the track and I did my best to make the most of it.

8/3/03: Raceway Park, NJ
(Moto 1) +30C: 4th
I was very happy to be racing again! I got a good start and was in second for most of the 1st lap. Unfortunately, I crashed and fell back to 10th or so. I worked my way back up to 4th by the end of the 3rd lap, but just didn't have much energy to get 2nd and 3rd. They were close too.
(Moto 2) +30C: 5th
I got the holeshot and lead for the first few corners, but I was riding to conserve energy and settled into 2nd. I had a good lead on 3rd, but I stalled it at the end of the first lap. When I got going again I was in 6th. I passed 1 guy back, but was again low on energy. I rode once in the last 2 months and the track was rough! I know I can ride much better at tracks which aren't as rough. Hopefully I'll adjust.
Overall: 3rd

8/17/03: Raceway Park, NJ
(Moto 1) +30C: 5th
I had a decent start, but I need to put a new back tire on the get better traction. I worked up to second and then just didn't get the job done. I think I was a little tentative with my riding and it showed. Nobody got away, but my line choice needs to be better.
(Moto 2) +30C: 3rd
I got a similar start to the 1st moto. I again worked my way into 2nd. I was there for a while and just made a few mistakes that cost me a few positions. I know what I need to improve on and things will be fine. Overall I rode hard and held off 4th for the last lap. I was happy that I battled and didn't give up.

9/6/03: Budds Creek, NJ
(Moto 1) +25C: 2nd
The guy who drops the gate messed up and dropped the gate when he wasn't supposed to. My start was poor to say the least. There were 3 classes running at the same time so it was hard to know who was in front of me. I wound up second so I had a chance at the overall. I rode pretty good despite the track being extremely rutted do to rain over the prior few days.
(Moto 2) +25C: 1st
This time I got a good start. Since there were 3 classes running together, I knew who I had to beat tot he first turn and did so. This was a fun race because I was battling the guy who won the first moto for the whole race. We swaped the lead back and forth a few times. I knew I was faster, but I was tired and wanted to ride within myself. After a while I started to pressure him for the lead and he made a mistake. I got past and cruised to the win.
Overall: 1st

(Moto 1) +30C: 2nd
I got the holeshot and started to pull away. I came into a croner a little hot, didn't pull in the clutch enough and stalled it. A few guys got by before I got started again. A few corners later I did the same thing. A few more got by. I was upset with myself and charged all the way to the end of the moto. I didn't know how I finished until I was called us out for the sencond moto. I was happy with the way things turned out because I had a chance at another overall. Considering that I was pulling away before I stalled my bike, I was confident going into the second moto.
(Moto 2) +30C: 4th
I was getting tired by the end of the day. I usually race 1 class bacause my home track gets so rough. I figured I could do 2 classes at Budds. In the end I made the right choice, but I didn't have as mich energy in the final moto as I would have liked. Right from the start I could tell I wasn't as aggressive. I had a top 3 start and was running in 3rd for the first 2 laps. I was pressuring 2nd, knew I was faster, but couldn't get around him. The track wasn't wide open due to the rain and passing was gamble sometimes. There was more than one line, but it was tough to switch lines once I was in one. It was pretty much pick a line a go with it. On the last lap I picked the wrong line and I got passed. The guy behind me had caught up to us. I know I could have passed and pulled away from 2nd, but I didn't have enough in my tank to ride like I wanted to. I rode conservative and sometimes it doesn't pay off. I was happy overall with my riding and results. I know where I am weak and will work to get better.

Overall for 2003
This year went pretty well. I won a few races and overalls. I rode much better toward the end of the season. I would like to go to Loretta's next year as well. I qualified for the regional this year, but couldn't attend. I am looking forward to next year. My life will be a little more settled and my financial situation will be much better. Thanks to all my sponsors, BG, Mom and Dad, and those who support me!
